In the unconfined compressive strength test, a rock specimen is submitted to an increasing axial compression until the failure. The axial stress at failure is the unconfined compressive strength (UCS). The interpretation of the results should take into account the punctual value of the measurement as well as the orientation of the discontinuities.

fr L'essai de compression uniaxiale d'une éprouvette de roche, également appelé essai de compression simple, consiste à soumettre une éprouvette de roche à une charge axiale croissante, jusqu'à la rupture. La résistance à la compression est la contrainte axiale atteinte au moment de la rupture. L'interprétation des résultats devra prendre en compte la valeur ponctuelle de la mesure ainsi que l'orientation des discontinuités.
