The swelling test with the oedometer is carried out on fine materials in the presence of water. This test enables to determine the swelling pressure of a material and its deformation when it is subjected, in the presence of water, to vertical stresses lower than its in situ overburden pressure. It is carried out on several specimens tested under different stress values.

fr L'essai de gonflement à l'oedomètre est effectué sur des matériaux fins mis en présence d'eau. Cet essai permet de déterminer la pression de gonflement d'un matériau ainsi que sa déformation lorsqu'il est soumis, en présence d'eau, à des contraintes verticales inférieures à cette pression de gonflement. Il est réalisé sur plusieurs éprouvettes testées sous différentes valuers de contraintes.
