Il est précisé dans la Geologic Time Scale (Gradstein et al., 2012) que le Toarcien peut être subdivisé soit en 2, soit en 3 sous-étages. Dans A Concive Geological Time Scale (Ogg et al., 2016), le parti est pris de supprimer le Toarcien moyen, hypothèse qui est prise en compte dans les pourcentages indiqués. La présence du Toarcien moyen est suggérée par Cariou et Hantzpergue (1997).
